Seattle’s rich musical scene is a lot like bread dough. It’s bubbling, rising and ready to sustain an individual, family or community. And today, we have yet another example: new singles from soul singer Otieno Terry, rapper XP and rock band Deep Sea Diver.

There’s a dark, sensual pop that Prince achieves in his music, made visible in the movie Purple Rain where he gyrates and screeches on stage to the audience. Seattle’s Otieno Terry achieves this same musicality in his new single, “There Is No More.” With a voice full of human passion and computer accuracy, Terry walks us into the dark colors and keeps us there like a shrouded guide with a lone candle.

XP

In college I listened to this rap group called Dungeon Family. It featured both members of Outkast and Gnarls Barkley’s Cee Lo Green. It had a deep, intentionally humorous, ghoulish sound. Somehow, Tyler “XP” achieves this same grimy sonic quality on much of his new single, “Not Today,” produced by Seattle’s Ryan Lewis. XP, it should be noted, is featured on several of Macklemore and Lewis’ latest record, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made. And his flow is dope on the new track. It achieves an authentic, jovial bounce at the three-minute mark and is indicative of someone able to be any type of emcee he wants.

Deep Sea Diver

The animalistic cries emanating from Jessica Dobson’s guitar on “See These Eyes,” the new single from her band Deep Sea Diver, dive and shoot and wiggle into the world almost effortlessly. She is a master electric guitar player and a wizard with tone. The video for the song features astonishing cinematography, employing similar tactics to the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” In the video, Dobson shows off for Seattle musical great Dave Matthews, who wears a white t-shirt with the word “CAMEO” written on it. It’s as fun as it sounds.
