immerse yourself in a coffee wonderland in Starbucks’ first international Reserve Roastery in Shanghai, China

Shanghai’s coffee aficionados received an early Christmas present on December 6, 2017, when CEO Howard Schultz unveiled Starbucks’ first foreign Reserve Roastery on Nanjing Xi Lu. The sprawling 30,000-square-foot space is twice the size of the company’s original reserve roastery in Seattle, though this didn’t prevent thirsty crowds from queuing for hours on opening day. Regardless, the Seattle-based brand is determined to showcase its artisanal credentials, hence the trio of “experience” bars featuring 100 brevetages from around the globe, including China’s Yunnan province, rather than the usual green tea frappucinos. Square footage aside, the company’s newest and largest store — at least until a 43,000-square-foot concept planned for Chicago opens in 2019 — hosts plenty of features that set it apart from its Pacific Northwest predecessor, starting with the high ceilings adorned with 10,000 hexagonal wood tiles to an 88-foot hand-carved bar to Starbucks’ first in-store AR experience that allows this tech-loving crowd to access information and pay remotely with their phones. Upstairs, a 3-D printed tea bar nods to China’s centuries-old tea culture and nearby a 40-ton copper coffee roasting cask inscribed with 1,000 Chinese characters recalling Starbucks’ remarkable rise in China, where a new outlet opens every 15 hours.
