KEXP has always been about discovering new music and sharing it far and wide. That’s nothing new, and staffers are now returning to Mexico City this October. This time, KEXP is hosting two live events: Live on KEXP sessions and the inaugural El Sonido Live MEXICO.

Live on KEXP in Mexico will feature 12 Ibero-American artists performing at El Desierto Casa Estudio in Mexico City. Hosted by KEXP DJs Cheryl Waters and Albina Cabrera, these sessions will highlight modern Latin artists while also honoring the 25th anniversary of Vive Latino, the largest Ibero-American music festival in the world. This marks the first time KEXP has produced an in-person experience in Mexico’s capital city. The performances will be available on YouTube starting in November.

“We started in 2019, capturing content from that magical city, and now we are super thrilled to be back in Mexico for the third edition of Live on KEXP,” says Cheryl Waters, who is also the station’s creative director. “It is an exciting thing to be able to go to places where bands are, and share that music with our listeners.”

El Sonido Live MEXICO will be the first time El Sonido has ventured outside the U.S., extending the boundaries of the weekly radio show that has brought Latin American music to Seattle since 2010. Tickets for the Oct. 19 event will go on sale on Aug. 22.

“We are excited to bring Live on KEXP to Mexico and introduce El Sonido Live to our audience,” adds Albina Cabrera, KEXP’s Latin partnerships, editorial manager, and Host of El Sonido. “This collaboration with Vive Latino and the support of Indie Rocks Magazine reaffirms our commitment to amplifying Latin American voices in the global music landscape.”

KEXP has about 280,000 weekly listeners. On YouTube, they have 3.2 million subscribers and nearly 1.7 billion views, 75% of which come from outside the U.S., with Mexico as its largest international audience.
