Kristal Brent Zook visits Elliott Bay Books to present her book The Girl in the Yellow Poncho, which PEOPLE magazine calls "a brave, heart-stirring memoir."

The Girl in the Yellow Poncho is Kristal Brent Zook’s coming-of-age tale about what it means to be biracial in America. Throughout, she grapples with in-betweenness, childhood sexual assault, economic insecurity, and multiple generations of alcoholism and substance abuse on both the black and white sides of her family. Her story is one of strong black women—herself, her cousin, her mother, and her grandmother—and the generational cycles of oppression and survival that seemingly define their lives.

Kristal Brent Zook is an award-winning journalist, a professor of journalism at Hofstra University in New York, and the author of four books including most recently, The Girl in the Yellow Poncho. Dr. Zook's entertainment, cultural, and social justice journalism has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Life, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Book Review, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Essence, The Washington Post, and others. She has made appearances on outlets such as NPR, CNN, MSNBC, C-Span, and MTV. She is based in Miami and New York.
