Must Listen
Earshot Jazz Festival Takes Over the Town
(10/9 to 11/18, times vary) This year’s citywide jazz-aganza boasts more than 50 concerts, including the Wayne Shorter Quartet (above) (10/11), starring the Grammy-gobbling saxophonist; Colombian jazz harpist Edmar Castañeda (10/16), who plays the instrument in ways you’ve never seen; the Memphis-born, globally influenced Charles Lloyd Quartet (10/17); and Afro-Cuban ensemble Pedrito Martinez Group (10/22).
Must View
What to See at the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival
(10/8 to 10/18, times vary) The fest celebrates 20 years of insubordinate cinema with a compelling lineup featuring Freeheld, a movie based on a true story about the right to transfer pension benefits to domestic partners and the new, locally made documentary Drag Becomes Him, about Seattle performer Jinkx Monsoon.
Must Stroll
Intimate Impressionism at SAM
(Through 1/3/2016, times vary) In the new show Intimate Impressionism from the National Gallery of Art, SAM fills its walls with tiny treasures: small-scale paintings by a bunch of French guys you may have heard of, such as Monet, Cezanne, Degas and Renoir and one from the Netherlands who goes by Van Gogh.
Must See
Bloomsday at ACT Theatre
(Through 10/11, times vary) This world-premiere play by prolific local playwright Steven Dietz (Becky’s New Car) spins out from James Joyce’s Ulysses into the time-traveling story of a man searching Dublin for the woman he fell for 30 years prior.
Must Take a Selfie
Photo Center Northwest Presents Me and My Selfie
(10/10 to 10/31, times vary) There’s an “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” vibe to the exhibit Me and My Selfie, which explores this worldwide phenomenon in the context of photographic self-portraiture in art history. Yes, you will be invited to submit your selfies!
