Our Interview with Kendall and Kylie Jenner at Nordstrom
The Jenner sisters present their fall/winter collection of shoes and handbags for Madden Girl
By Kari Lutcavich August 25, 2014
Upbeat party music blasted loudly and hundreds of teens anxiously waited with their camera phones ready (some even arrived at the break of dawn to stand in line) for the chance to meet Kendall and Kylie Jenner on Saturday at Nordstrom for the launch of their fall and winter shoes and handbags collection for Madden Girl. The first 300 fans got to take home an autographed photo of Kim Kardashian’s little sisters, but just before their public appearance, we had the opportunity to chat with them about their faves in their Madden Girl line, and learned about a few of their fashion influences and beauty secrets. What else did we find out? Hint: Steve Madden and dad Bruce Jenner are practically besties.
What elements of your own personal style did you bring to this collection and what are your favorites for fall?
Kendall: In the collection before this one it was more beachy and summery and now we wanted to make it more New York, edgy, hard vibe. I really like the Chic shoe.
Kylie: There are a lot of darker colors in this collection. My favorite shoe is the Avery, it’s a boot heel and has a cool lace.
How involved in the design process were you and how long did it all take?
Kendall: It all happened pretty fast. It seemed like one day we were all in the meeting room designing and thinking of ideas and then the next day it was out. The whole process took about a year.
Did you work directly with Steve Madden? How was it?
Kendall: We did and he’s awesome. He’s like best friends with our dad now and they go golfing together all the time. It’s a little weird – they even have bets and they’re really competitive, but he’s awesome.
Who are your fashion icons and designers you love?
Kendall: I really love Olivier Rousteing with Balmain and Riccardo Tisci.
Which is your favorite fashion week (New York, Milan or Paris) and why?
Kendall: New York. I love Paris because it’s beautiful, but New York fashion week is fun and I feel like there are a lot more people there that I know. They’re all really enjoyable and different.
Kylie: Paris fashion is super cool, but I always get really excited to go to New York. I always feel like everyone talks about New York outfits.
When it comes to inspiration for fashion, do you pay more attention to what’s on the runway or street style outside of the shows?
Kendall: It’s 50/50 for me. I’m always watching what’s going on at the shows and I’m also constantly looking on Tumblr for street styles.
Kylie: I feel like everything I wear is super organic. I never look at runway or street wear.
How do you balance all the things you do in your life, from personal appearances like this one to larger fashion events and filming of the show?
Kendall: I feel like I’m in two different worlds sometimes, it’s pretty crazy. It’s what we’ve grown up with and we learned to be around it and deal with it. We feel really blessed and fortunate.
In general, how long does it take you to get ready in the mornings? And what is your must-have, go-to item in your beauty bag?
Kendall: Five minutes. Literally, I don’t care when I leave the house. I throw on some mascara and I’m done. This is on a regular day when I’m just going out to lunch or something. I don’t really have a “must-have” beauty product when I’m going out, but Lancôme is my favorite mascara.
Kylie: It depends on where I’m going, but it takes me about 30 minutes to get ready. I always have my lipstick and powder. I have a favorite…but it’s secret.
What’s next for you two?
Kendall: We definitely have a lot going on right now. I don’t know…we’ll see. Growing up, maybe some surprises…you’ll have to wait and see.
