The name might seem odd, but Kaleidoscope Vision quite aptly describes the soul of this Capitol Hill vintage clothing boutique. Owned and operated by childhood friends Ria Leigh Rabut, Mackenzie Garfield and Sophia Phillips, KV features finely tuned clothing collections, hung in organized vignettes. Each set is inspired by an era or cultural element; a recent “American Summer” motif explored Fourth of July–ready style with a gingham maxi skirt ($38), Pendleton blanket backpack ($38) and a striped Givenchy pant with matching bandanna-style top ($85). “It can be hard to get a vision or see a vintage piece for what it really is,” says Rabut. “The history can be lost, or the context forgotten. We’re hoping to bring both back into perspective.”

In addition to clothing, shoes and accessories, the creative ladies offer eclectic how-to workshops (terrariums!), and next month will feature local artisans’ housewares, books and novelty finds. The collections, purveyors and goods change monthly to reveal a new whirlwind of color and pattern, much like the ever-changing view through a kaleidoscope.

Travel lovers are the easiest people to buy for. Wrap a gift in old maps and they’ll spend hours deciphering the roadways and important coordinates. Put something inside the wrapping that will satiate their wanderlust, or encourage it, and you might be their next invitee to Paris.
