Thirty-two local emerging designers submitted their portfolios this summer to be considered for our annual fashion designer competition.

After several intensive rounds of judging and deliberation, five winners (and two runners-up) have emerged (read all about them here).

We were inspired by their bold concepts (“I want to give women something beyond clothing; I want to give them power); by their thoughtful insight (I design for thinking women; women who go about their lives with purpose looking for a creative solution”). We were blown away by their sewing skills, their ability to merge fashion and function, and even their good humor (“Frankly, I’m a vintage-fabric hog.”)

We published individual interviews with each designer in our September issue (on newsstands now).

But if you want to see the designers really strut their stuff, come to the Seamless in Seattle Fashion Show on Wednesday, August 29 at the Seattle Art Museum ($35-$75. 1300 First Ave., 206.654.3100; seattlemag.com/events.

In addition to debuting their complete collections on the runway, our five winning designers will compete live for a chance to display their wares at Neiman Marcus at The Bravern during the Fashion’s Night Out festivities (9/6).

Tinsel, eggnog, mistletoe, and luggage

Travel lovers are the easiest people to buy for. Wrap a gift in old maps and they’ll spend hours deciphering the roadways and important coordinates. Put something inside the wrapping that will satiate their wanderlust, or encourage it, and you might be their next invitee to Paris.
