Tonight in Seattle: A Free Play Reading from New Century Theatre Co

The local theatre troupe that brought you The Adding Machine and O Lovely Glowworm continues its free Pipeline series tonight with a dramatic reading of The Lonesome West by Martin McDonagh, the twisted, yet talented, writer who brought you The Pillowman and In Bruges.

The performance features Michael Patten, MJ Sieber, Matt Shimkus, and Anastasia Higham – and the gruesome story sounds just right for a chilly Seattle evening this Halloween week.

The reading starts at 7:30 p.m. at Solo Bar in Queen Anne (200 Roy St, Seattle). Get there early to claim a seat – and clink glasses with some of our town’s most talented theater professionals.

“Michael has picked one of his favorite plays, The Lonesome West, from Martin McDonagh’s Connemara trilogy, all set in his gleefully macabre landscape of Leenane, a quaint rural town where the skies are always gray, the people are always angry, and domestic homicide and mutilation are the No. 1 recreational activities.

“The story centers on two brothers, Coleman & Valene, whose father has just died in a shotgun accident, yet they don’t seem to be grieving. Instead, they are mired in a kind of Cain & Able feud. They find it impossible to exist without massive and violent disputes over the most mundane and innocent of topics. Only Father Welsh, the young local priest, is prepared to try to reconcile the two before their petty squabblings spiral into vicious and bloody carnage.”
