WHERE: The Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area. WHY: For the first annual Columbia Gorge Arts & Culture Discovery Month (columbiagorgeartsandculture.com), wherein 19 arts organizations spanning the Gorge celebrate local art, music and culture. Events include the Columbia Gorge Fiddle Contest (May 6-8 in Hood River, OR; columbiagorgefiddlecontest.com), featuring the best fiddlers in the west, plus jam sessions, concerts and workshops for wannabes. Also in Hood River, the Running Fruit Ladders installation (near the Mt. Hood Winery) is a half-mile of brightly painted 14-foot tall wooden fruit-picking ladders by Oregon artist John Maher. ON THE WA SIDE: Visit North America’s only full-scale reproduction of the original Stonehenge, near the Maryhill Museum of Art (in Goldendale, WA), which is showcasing new work in its sculpture garden starting May 14. GETTING THERE: Take I-90 east to Ellensberg, then I-82 south toward Goldendale. Cross the Gorge and head east on I-85.
