Seattle magazine is accepting applications now for internships to begin in the early fall. We review applications on a rolling basis, so applicants can apply at any time: Download the application and email it, along with resume and samples of published work, to senior editor Gwendolyn Elliott at [email protected]. Interviews will be scheduled about six weeks prior to the start of an internship.
Our interns gain hands-on experience working closely with top editors in an environment that is creative and collaborative. As an intern, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for producing this premier monthly publication and its website. Unpaid internships require a commitment of four hours a day, five days a week for six months. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. All editorial interns provide invaluable support for our print magazine and the magazine’s website.
Enduring enthusiasm, curiosity and a love of the written word are essential prerequisites for the position. You will be called upon regularly to use your excellent verbal communication and research skills. Interns should have an interest in learning the basic tools of the web, including content management systems, working and researching on the Internet, blogging, SEO and social media.
Attention to detail—even an obsession with it—will come in handy. Interns help us bring up-and-coming trends home to the readers. Observing life in the city, interns are the eyes, ears and feet of the magazine. You will work on a wide range of projects, from the glamorous to the granular. You will become familiar with the varied pace of a magazine’s production schedule and how the magazine and website are integrated.
Projects for the magazine might include (but are not limited to) the following: fact-checking stories, helping with research on major projects, pitching ideas for the magazine, writing short pieces, conducting interviews, attending events and researching story leads.
For the website, interns learn to upload magazine content to the online archives, populate the online event calendar, digital imaging and publishing software, assist with social media coverage and research, and pitch blog ideas. Interns will also have an opportunity to produce original online content, write headlines to SEO standards under the guidance of an editor, and learn a suite of web and online publishing tools.
Each internship is different, depending on the interest and skills of the intern. You’ll be given assignments based on those things. As a result, some interns will spend more time working on the website; others will devote more time to the print publication. Some will split their time evenly. Editors work to craft an internship experience that will help each intern move forward with their career goals.
