It’s been 10 years since the Join Design collective—a national community of independent designers and makers built on a shared ethos and aesthetic—launched in Seattle. But there was no physical location until members Sallyann Corn and Joe Kent opened Join Shop (South Lake Union, 400 Fairview Ave. N) last April.

The narrow shop stocks a highly curated assortment of affordable housewares and gifts from about 60 artists around the country. There’s an emphasis on clean lines, playful use of color and smart design—all of which show up in these Anywhere vases ($38), steel-and-cork cutouts that turn any vessel into a vase, made in Corn and Kent’s own design studio, Fruitsuper. Corn says she wanted to be able to “put a few tulips in a glass and have a beautiful bouquet, instead of the opposite.”

She focuses on keeping the shop stocked with beautiful, affordable items. “There’s this idea that if you give up price, you give up quality,” Corn says. “And that’s just not true. You just have to dig a lot deeper.” Thankfully, she’s done the digging for us.
