Fall cooking classes to sign up for now
Eat Seattle in Pike Place and Erica Burke's Canal Market offer new baking and cooking classes
By Seattle Mag September 21, 2015
That nip in the air means it’s time to leave your favorite summer restaurant patio. Go home. Now, go to the kitchen. Locate your apron. Tie it in a bow. Good, yes, just like that.
Now cook something fabulous.
Need inspiration? A slew of new, fall-themed cooking classes have made their way into the culinary vortex – some are even kid-friendly and include the apron. We think these will fill up fast – so sign up now.
Volunteer Park Cafe head baker Emily Crain is offering a trio of classes at owner Ericka Burke’s Portage Bay mercantile and cafe, Canal Market, which opened earlier this year. Here are class descriptions and details, courtesy of Burke’s baking ninjas:
Back to School Treats—September 27
Parents and kids are encouraged to come together to this one, where they’ll learn how to make two kinds of muffins using fall ingredients. Low in sugar and easy to make, the muffins are perfect for school day snacks. The kids will get to participate in the whole process, and families will take home four muffins as well as the recipes. Limited to 20 kid-adult pairs
Cost: $35/pair (including apron)
Time: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Halloween Cookie Class—October 25
This class is also set up for parents and kids to work together, decorating cookies for Halloween. Each kid will take home four treats. Limited to 20 kid-adult pairs.
Cost: $35/pair (Including apron)
Time: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Holiday Pies—November 22
This class is for adults only, and will teach participants how to create the best Thanksgiving pies around. The class will cover making crust and three fillings: pumpkin, apple, and chocolate pecan. Each person goes home with a pie and all three recipes. Limited to 20 adults
Cost: $45
Time: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Not ready to think about the holidays? You might try Eat Seattle’s new culinary tours and classes at Pike Place Market. Eat Seattle founder Liz McCune themes her classes around seasonal, local ingredients that are purchased during a tour and tasting of the Market.
She’ll introduce you to veteran vendors, teach you how to select meat and produce, and even explain the history of Washington produce (did you know asparagus used to grow wild here?). Then, it’s off to the Atrium Kitchen to cook, learn techniques, and enjoy a three-course meal with fellow tour-and-cook mates. Check out a video of a recent class and sign up here.
