How many chefs, fisherman, organizations and locals does it take to raise a sustainable salmon? A-freakin-ton.

Luckily, Seattle is awash with chefs and restaurateurs who are members of Smart Catch, a new sustainable seafood program designed to address and reverse the seafood crisis (that 90 percent of the world’s fisheries are either fully fished or overfished). Smart Catch restaurateurs go the extra mile to source responsible, high-quality fish down to species, origin and catch method.

Their efforts are notable year-round, but will culminate August 3 to 8 in a week-long celebration of oceanic savories and surprises. From a buttoned-up gala at the Seattle Aquarium to the 43 Smart Catch certified restaurants featuring seafood dishes from $5 to $30 to the blue tents popping up in and around Seattle, there will be something for every fish fiend.

Sustainable Seafood Week kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 at Pier 59’s Seattle Aquarium, where Taylor Shellfish will be serving fresh oysters on the half shell and Cape Cleare Fishery will wow with flights of sockeye, coho and king salmon.

You can pick up salmon grilling tips from Good Fish author Becky Selengut and sip yummy summertime cocktail on the deck plus taste seafood bites by leaders in the local sustainability movement, including Roy Breiman of Cedarbrook Lodge, Jason Wilson of Crush and Miller’s Guild and Seth Caswell from Dunbar Room and Hotel Sorrento. Tickets to the gala are $85 and can be purchased here.

If you skip the gala, make a lunch or dinner reservation at any of the 43 Smarch Catch restaurants throughout the area.

That should hold you over until October, when it’s time for Ahipalooza.
