The Mariners were in good spirits Saturday night, thanks largely to Ben Gamel. The rookie outfielder is having a breakout yeara bright spot in an otherwise middling season for the M’sand looked especially good this weekend against his former team.

The long-haired left fielder only played six games with the New York Yankees before being dealt to Seattle for a couple low-level pitching prospects, a trade that came back to haunt them Saturday at Safeco Field. In the third inning, Gamel blasted a home run off Masahiro Tanaka, giving the Mariners the lead. However, the lead wouldn’t hold and it would take Gamel’s extra-inning heroics to put the M’s over the top.

With the score tied 5-5, Gamel led off the bottom of the 10th inning blasting a double to center field. Two batters later Nelson Cruz ripped a single to left, sending Gamel flying around the bases with his fabulous mane flowing behind him. A throw home was off line and the streaking Gamel slapped the plate as he slid in for the game-winning run.

After the appropriate attaboys from his teammates, Gamel joined ROOT Sports reporter Angie Mentink in the dugout for a post-game interview. A Gatorade bath was inevitable after a game like that.

As the interview started, Gamel’s teammates Danny Valencia and Guillermo Heredia snuck up behind them with a cooler of Gatorade and dumped it over Gamel’s right shoulder. While Gamel was sufficiently soaked, Mentink took the brunt of the celebratory splash.

Despite the shock of the cold, sticky showering, Mentink shook it off and did her best to carry on some semblance of an interview looking like she’d just been shoved into a pool. She clearly had a sense of humor about it, later posting photos on Twitter.
