Going out of business cheese sale this weekend

Culture Club Cheese Bar and The Calf & Kid closing their doors

It’s a sad day for Seattle cheese lovers.

Culture Club, the lovely little cheese bar in Capitol Hill, is closing its doors after six months. I enjoyed my visits to the little slice of dairy heaven, but ultimately, it didn’t make enough money to sustain itself, owner and cheesemonger Sheri LaVigne told me via email yesterday.

LaVigne also owns venerable The Calf & Kid fromagerie inside Melrose Market, which she reports is also going out of business after six years. During its time, the cheese counter was frequented by all sorts of fooderati, including Anthony Bourdain.

But, sadly, that’s how the curd crumbles. On a positive note, LaVigne is holding a massive “cheese fire sale” this weekend to unload more than 100 pounds of cheese from all over the world. Stop by 1806 12 Ave from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday May 14 or Sunday May 15 for 50 percent off and beer and wine pours “until we run out,” she told me.
