WHERE: The Quileute Oceanside Resort, on the northernmost point of Washington’s Pacific Coast (330 Ocean Drive, La Push; 360.374.5267; quileuteoceanside.com).
WHY: For wild midwinter weather drama and unbeatable storm watching.
WHAT: This rustic resort is perched on First Beach in La Push (one of the main settings for the Twilight series) and it’s second to none for a windswept, moody sulk. The storms here are legendary—pounding waves, fierce gusts and horizontal rain—but you’ll be snug, staring out at the sea stacks from the comfort of your in-room Jacuzzi. Check into a deluxe, oceanfront cabin with fireplace and full kitchen (BYO groceries, since nearby stores are few) and watch the seasonal spectacle unfold.
SIDE TRIP: Throw your hiking boots and a fuzzy hat into the car and make the 20-minute drive to Rialto Beach, where acres of driftwood logs lay the groundwork for adventurous scrambling (seriously, bring sturdy shoes) and awesome bonfires in the prescribed fire rings.
