Starbucks, Mercedes-Benz Electrify I-5

Starbucks will install 100 charging stations along the I-5 corridor

A white Starbucks coffee cup and a sleek Mercedes-Benz key fob are placed on a green surface. Logos of Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks are shown at the bottom left corner.

Starbucks and Mercedes-Benz are blending coffee with EV charging.

The Seattle coffee purveyor will install Mercedes-Benz DC Fast chargers at 100 stores along the I-5 corridor from Canada to Mexico so motorists can grab a cup of coffee or a snack while charging their cars along the 1,400-mile stretch of highway.

Both companies have audacious sustainability goals: Starbucks’ renewable energy projects, including EV charging, is part of its goal to reduce carbon emissions 50% by 2030. Starbucks says it already has more than 1,000 stores across the United States with nearby access to EV charging. Mercedes-Benz’ “Ambition 2039” seek to reach carbon neutrality across its entire fleet.

Both companies also said they’re seeking to identify additional opportunities in key markets, including in urban areas and charging deserts.

“Partnering with Mercedes is the next step in expanding our EV charging offerings so our customers can refuel sustainably while they enjoy Starbucks,” says Starbucks Chief Sustainability Officer Michael Kobori in a press release.
