The University of Washington is among the best universities around the globe.

U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 rankings have UW tied at No. 7 with University College London, ahead of both Columbia and Yale universities. Harvard ranks No. 1, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stanford University. The University of Oxford, University of California Berkeley and University of Cambridge round out the top six.

The publication’s annual rankings are based on 13 indicators measuring academic research and global and regional reputations, including the number of publications in which UW researchers and faculty appear in, and total citations in other reports. All told, the magazine ranked 2,250 universities.

U.S News notes that around 70% of UW’s almost 50,000 students study at the undergraduate level, and the university also offers more than 370 graduate-level programs. UW also has 16 colleges and schools.

UW finished No. 6 last year. Washington State University ranked No. 397.
