Interior designer Keri Petersen’s clients loved the bones of their new Tudor-style abode in Tangletown, but realized it needed a few nips and tucks to truly make it their own. Namely, the attic bedroom space was lacking one of the most coveted elements people seek in a home: an en suite bathroom.

So Petersen, owner of Ballard-based residential design and real estate staging firm KP Spaces, carved out 80 square feet in the attic for an elegant master bathroom with dual sinks, a glass-enclosed shower and a small window to let in ample natural light.

“I opted for a classic style with a calm palette of gray, white and gray-blue that strikes a balance between masculine and feminine,” she says. “My clients like things that look fresh and refined.”

Petersen and her contractor, Jeff Carryer Construction, lined the walls in shiplap, a wood paneling that’s often arranged horizontally, and had it slicked in a bright white satin finish. On the floor, she opted for a sleek gray tile in an unexpected herringbone pattern and pretty penny-tile accents in the shower, which play off the home’s circa-1920s architecture. A contrasting grout adds even more visual interest.

The warm wood vanity with a luxe Carrara marble top—scored from Restoration Hardware—helps to “balance out the cool color palette,” Peterson says. “Their aesthetic is more contemporary [than the home’s style], so the vanity is a nice bridge between the two.”

With the bathroom project completed, Petersen has moved on to sprucing up the adjoining bedroom, noting that she’ll carry through details from the bath such as brass accents, colors and clean lines for a cohesive look.
